Wisconsin Academy of Physician Assistants

Advancing Careers. Enhancing Care™
 

The Wisconsin Academy of Physician Assistants (WAPA) was established in 1976 at a time when the physician assistant was a relatively unknown position in the medical field. Over time, WAPA has promoted public awareness and understanding of PAs, advocated on behalf of Wisconsin PAs, helped PAs find jobs in Wisconsin and provided continuing medical education to PAs.


WAPA is a constituent chapter of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA). Each year, WAPA sends delegates to the AAPA House of Delegates to engage in policy making activities under AAPA’s bylaws.

WAPA is governed by an elected Board of Directors, including a president, president-elect, immediate past president, secretary/treasurer, regional representatives and student members. A variety of standing committees exist to carry out activities specific to the committee, and a chairperson from each committee serves as a liaison to the Board. Opportunities exist for members to become involved in committees and the Board.


In the ever changing healthcare climate, WAPA works to ensure physician assistants are well-positioned to fill the healthcare needs of Wisconsin patients. WAPA remains focused on providing comprehensive, clear and passionate advocacy for the PA profession that elevates its standing with patients and medical professionals. WAPA aims to grow its influence within the state’s medical community, and to continuing promoting a strong interest in PA careers.

Charter

WAPA will provide comprehensive, clear and passionate advocacy for the Physician Assistant profession in WI that elevates its standing with patients and medical professionals, and drives its growth and influence within the state’s medical community.

Key Stakeholders

  • WAPA Members: WAPA helps improve understanding of the PA profession, improve its standing, and grow position and leadership opportunities, all of which enhances each member’s chances of finding a truly fulfilling and challenging position in Wisconsin.

  • Patients: WAPA helps patients understand the PA profession, its level of sophistication, and its critical role in assuring the very best care. Patients become much more comfortable with the idea of treatment from a PA.

  • Physicians: WAPA helps MDs/DOs understand how helpful PAs can be in spreading work load, supporting the success of their practice, and giving them greater professional and personal flexibility. The result is better, more attentive care.

  • Medical Staff: WAPA helps increase understanding of the PA role and level of expertise, as well as the overall quality of care and patient attentiveness. This in turn improves the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall office or facility team.

  • Wisconsin Communities: WAPA helps grow the PA profession in Wisconsin, which leads to greater availability and higher quality of care for all within Wisconsin, even rural areas with fewer physicians.
