November/December President's Message
12/23/2011
By David Wilson, PA-C
Happy Holidays! Soon we will be entering 2012 and I look forward to exciting changes for the academy in the upcoming year.
First, I would like to take a look back to highlights for 2011. It has been a good year for WAPA. We continue to be a strong academy with talented members who are working to improve PA practice in the state. Our legislative efforts have been slowed by the political unrest in the state but we continue to forge on with hopes of introducing SB 698 before the legislature in early 2012. The legislative and government affairs committee will be looking to all members for help by contacting their representatives and encouraging their support of our legislation. Watch the newsletter and email updates on how you can participate in the efforts.
Our academy continues to be strong financially. We have instituted a financial committee that will act as good stewards of academy money. This committee is charged with overseeing investments with hopes of continuing to build our resources.
This past year saw improved PA practice with final vote by the WIAA for the recognition of Physician Assistant signatures to WIAA the physical exam card. This, coupled with changes that can come out of SB 698, will make significant practice improvements here in Wisconsin.
What does 2012 hold in store?
In next year, the academy will see changes to the make up of the WAPA Board. These changes will hopefully allow our membership to have a greater voice on a more personal level within the academy. For several years the Board has suggested replacing the Director-at-Large position on the board with a Regional Director-at-Large. This will increase the board size but will give each region of the state a contact person on the board and a voice from your area. It allows the Wisconsin Academy better contact with the membership. This will be especially true with contacting our legislative representatives about our proposed bill.
The next year will also adjust the student representation on the WAPA board to reflect the increasing number of PA Schools in the state. It looks like Wisconsin may soon have five PA schools, which will increase our numbers in the state.
Elections
Have you given any thought to being involved with the WAPA Board? Our annual meeting coincides with the spring conference. This includes elections of new officers. If you feel the time is right for you to the involved with your academy please contact either elections chair Heather Sommers or President-Elect Jeff Oryall to find out more about running for the board.
I wish everyone in the academy a joyous holiday and a happy new year as we look forward to what 2012 has in store for us.
