The Ultrasound Workshop will offer sessions on 6 different topics. Please note that there are a limited number of slots each hour and attendees will be assigned specific times for sessions on the days they note as available. Confirmation of date and times for assigned sessions will be sent roughly 1 week prior to the workshop.
Introduction to chest ultrasound
Learn the basics of chest ultrasound, including cardiac views (cardiac wall motion, tamponade), lung screening (pulmonary edema, pneumothorax), and inferior vena cava (fluid status).
Advanced echo/cardiac ultrasound
Spend more time obtaining the 4 cardiac views and assessing for tamponade, wall motion abnormalities, ejection fraction, and valvular pathologies. Will also cover inferior vena cava (fluid status) and lung views (pulmonary edema, pneumothorax).
E-FAST (Extended-Focused Assessment of Sonography in Trauma)
Learn to obtain the 4 abdominal views (RUQ, LUQ, subxiphoid, and suprapubic) to assess for intraperitoneal free-fluid or cardiac tamponade. Also, a brief lung overview to assess for tension pneumothorax.
A clinical overview of the major abdominal organs, including kidneys (recognize hydronephrosis), gallbladder (recognize cholelithiasis), abdominal aorta, uterus, and ovaries.
Soft-tissue and Musculoskeletal
Learn to recognize basic soft-tissue pathology, including cellulitis vs. abscess. Soft tissue foreign body evaluation. Overview of the shoulder, hip, and knee joints, including approach to intra-articular aspiration and injections.
Learn to scan for lower extremity deep vein thrombosis. Scan the abdominal aorta (to assess for abdominal aortic aneurysm/dissection). Review the concepts of vascular access, including both peripheral and central venous line placement.
