UW – LaCrosse has had a busy winter.  Although December included an intense week of finals, the students found time to give back to the community and enjoy the holiday season. First year students rang holiday bells for the Salvation Army around the La Crosse area.  In addition, first and second year students got together with faculty for a holiday party at our program director’s house.  After finals, students and faculty went on a holiday break, which allowed for much needed time with friends and family.

First year students are almost done with their January term classes, which include three-week courses in nephrology, genitourinary medicine and exam, and healthcare systems, ethics, and laws.  During the clinical exam portion of this course, students learned and performed breast, pelvic, and male GU exams on professional patients.  We greatly appreciated the professional patients, who provided beneficial and constructive feedback to aid in our learning and professional development.  Healthcare systems, ethics, and law lectures were given by a variety of phenomenal guest speakers, including Thomas Schlesinger, PhD, an executive consultant at Gundersen, Thomas Harter, PhD, an ethicist at Gundersen, and Jeff Nicholson, PA-C, a PA expert witness.

Our class treasurer, Joy Pehler, has put tremendous effort towards applying for and securing grants to send UW-L students to the MAPA, WAPA, and AAPA conferences.  Plans are being finalized for most of the first years to attend the spring MAPA and WAPA conferences.  Additionally, five of the first year students are finalizing their plans to attend the AAPA conference in San Francisco at the end of May.  Second year students are finishing up their seventh clinical rotation and preparing for graduation at May.

On behalf of the entire UW-L PA program, we are very excited for the upcoming opportunities to continue to learn and grow.
